What to expect in Year 2

From the start of term in September children will learn in a range of different ways. We will continue to build children's independence through a combination of child-led learning, short whole-class carpet sessions, outdoor learning and small group focus activities.

Their school day will build up from Year 1 to be more structured and predominantly consist of differentiated whole-class activities and small-group carousel activities. Learning experiences will remain practical, hands-on and, most importantly, fun!

Physical Education

In Year 2 children will participate in both indoor and outdoor PE lessons. They will be required to have their PE kits in school everyday. They will change into and out of their PE kits independently for these lessons.

PE kits should be left in school during the week and should be returned at the end of each week for a good wash!  All items, including the PE bag, should be clearly named.  Pumps, plimsolls or trainers must be worn for PE, with the exception of a few gym or dance lessons.  Therefore, school shoes will not be permitted to be worn during PE lessons and your child will not be able to fully participate in the lesson.

Entering the classroom and being picked up

The school gate opens at 8:40am and children can come into the room and start putting their things away from 8:45am. We encourage you to allow your children to come into the room independently. As we will often be supporting the children with a morning activity, we won’t always be able to speak to parents in the morning.  A reminder to please pass any messages through the home-school diary, or via the school office.

At the end of the school day, children will be handed over to parents at the classroom door.  If children are not picked up by 3:40pm, they will be taken to the front entrance.

Labelled belongings

Year 2 children will be responsible for looking after their own personal belongings.  Please ensure that everything is clearly labelled, including book bags, jumpers, coats, PE kits, water bottles and stationery.

Missing items may be located in the lost property bins situated throughout the school.

Water bottles

Your child may bring in a water bottle each day which can be kept in the designated area of the classroom. Please remind them to collect it each afternoon to take home to be washed.

Home Learning

Children in Year 2 can expect to have home learning each week.  We expect children to spend a maximum of 20 minutes a night on home learning - including reading. Initially, children will receive spelling home learning once a week which consists of a group of words to learn or a spelling investigation based on a spelling rule we are learning.  This will go out on a Friday and be due back on the following Friday.  Reading records should be brought into school everyday so that the children's books can be changed as required.

Phonics and Spelling

Phonics and Spelling is an essential aspect of learning to read and write and will remain a key element of the Year 2 timetable.  Children in Year 2 will continue to build on the phonics knowledge they developed in Year 1.

The year will start with a recap of sounds already learned (Phases 2 to 5) before moving onto Phase 6 spelling patterns and common exception words the remainder of the year. 

Common Exception Words

Children in Year 2 should be able to spell most of the common exception words by the end of the year. These are words which do not follow the common phonetic spelling rules of the language, or where the usual rules act in an unusual way. 

Y2 SATs

In May 2019, the children will be completing their KS1 SATs. What can I do at home?

  • Ensure children have a healthy breakfast and a good night’s sleep
  • Arrive on time
  • Talk about their day
  • Reading daily – listened to and read to
  • Help with homework
  • Games – dice games, I spy, pretend play, shopping
  • Writing at home – shopping lists, diaries, emails to family members, letters, stories
  • Checking book bags and homework diaries for letters

Parent Help

We would really appreciate parent help every day listening to readers and helping children with their maths and phonics. Please see the class teacher if you are able to help with hearing children read, taking small groups, going on school outings, special days etc.  At St Paul's, we are always grateful for any support you can provide.

Wet Play Games

Do you have any games that would be suitable for Year 2 during wet play?  Board games suitable for 6-7 year olds, puzzles, and K’Nex or other construction games would be much appreciated.

Role Play Area

Next year, we would like to develop our Role Play area in KS1 to help the children’s imagination and creative minds. Do you have any costumes, child-size furniture, tills, toy computers etc. that you are happy to donate to the KS1 team to develop the children’s role play area?  Please speak to Mr Robertson or Mr Gill.
